Bachelor at IAIK
You can start with your bachelor-thesis project under the guidance of an IAIK trainer any time throughout the year. All groups at IAIK offer plenty of projects. Check out some sample projects below. However, we found that many of you want to work on the bachelor-thesis project in a more structured manner. They want to work together with others towards the same goal of getting an interesting project done. For those students we provide what we call "Bachelor at IAIK". Read on in order to get details about this project.
Are you worrying about where to do your bachelor-thesis project like many of your fellow students? Are you trying to figure out how to get this project going successfully? We suggest that you consider our proposal described here. Come to us, and we show you how to successfully master your bachelor thesis.
After all, this is probably the first time during your university studies that you should work independently on a larger project. We do this on a daily basis. Why don't you come to us and watch us how we do this. You can get useful hits on how to successfully do project work. Moreover, you might even get a prize for producing the best bachelor thesis of the year.
Further down in this text you can find some of the topics which we offer or have offered as bachelor-thesis projects. But, more importantly than the topic itself, we think that the support which we promise to offer is essential. We would like to support you in your effort of "how will I master my thesis project".
We have been running "Bachelor@IAIK" since 2009. The research results which students came up with were very often highly promising. Some of the work was excellent and got rewarded with the "Best at IAIK".
These are our plans for "Bachelor@IAIK 2017":
We will have a first information session for "Bachelor@IAIK 2017" on Friday, December 2nd, 2016.
Like in the previous years, we will offer roughly 20 students to work with us at the institute as "research apprentices."
During December and January we ask students to pick some project together with an adviser. Check out the example projects below. Get active, talk to anyone of us; we will help you finding your project. To participate in "Bachelor@IAIK 2017", you need reach an agreement with an adviser before the start of the project in February 2017.
We offer two "intensive blocks" of work at IAIK. These blocks are put into time slots which do not interfere with the usual lecture times. These blocks have a duration of 8-9 work days.
- 1st block: February 27 - March 10, 2017. (Starts in semester break).
- 2nd block: April 19 - April 28, 2017. (Easter break).
These two blocks constitute roughly 150 hours of work. During these hours, we would like to
- help you to research a topic,
- help you to structure your project,
- help you to become better in scientific writing in our "Writing Lab",
- show you how we work,
- ask you to participate in our project meetings,
- offer you to get to know us better,
- offer you to discuss your ideas with us,
- encourage you to master with us times which need tedious work,
- explain to you what it means to work in science and engineering,
an much more. After all, we will drink a lot of coffee, tea, or juice. And quite likely, we will sit one or the other evening together - working, of course.
You can see that the two intensive blocks fall into time slots which do not conflict too much with the ordinary semester business. Students of ICE might finish their bachelor thesis by April 28 with a presentation since their thesis project has only 8 ECTS points. Students of computer science and software engineering & business have 15 ECTS points; this might cause their thesis project to last a bit longer. Therefore, we offer a second round of presentations most likely on the 9th of June 2017.

Although you can find only some teachers listed as teachers of the course, many other senior advisors help out with the bachelor-thesis projects. We offer bachelor projects mainly in the summer term. However, if you want to work during other periods of the year, just talk with us.
How do you choose a topic?
Each year by end of November or beginning of December, we present the topics for the summer semester to come. Check out the text above. However, we are also willing to advise bachelor students during other periods of the year. You just need to talk with us about your wishes.
The topics for 2017 will be presented here on December 2nd 2016. Should you not find anything interesting for you, talk to us; we are always searching for motivated students.
