Working scientifically (Roderick Bloem's Group)

In this course you will learn how to work scientifically. You will learn about literature research, paper writing, and presenting. The topic of this group is bugs.

This group will be taught in english, which means that you will also write and present in english. The course consists of about 20 hours of lectures and presentations and another 50 hours of independent work.

Contents

We will conver the following topics.

  • We will analyze the structure of scientific papers.
  • We will look at the structure of an introduction in detail.
  • We will study introductions at the phrase level.
  • You will write a one-page report.
  • We will speak about your reports.
  • We will discuss what scientific work is
  • You will construct a poster with typical phrases.
  • We will discuss bugs and software correctness
  • You will pick a topic for your paper and your talk.
  • You will construct a mindmap for your topic
  • You will collect a list of sources for your paper
  • We will discuss how to give a good talk
  • You submit a paper
  • You give a short talk
  • You will listen to other students' talks and ask questions.

Grading

Your grade is determined by the following:

  • 5% Short report
  • 10% Poster (NO POSTER THIS YEAR)
  • 10% Mind map
  • 45% Paper
  • 30% Talk

In order to pass the course, you will need to turn something in for each of these assignments

2009 schedule

The rest of the semester will look like this:
  • 10 Dec, 16:15: go to talk by Ralph-Johann Back in i11 and fill out the question form.
  • 15 Dec. Turn in list of literature per email. Subject: EWA-D2. (The list should consist mostly of scientific literature, that is, papers in conference proceedings and scientific journals.)
  • 17 Dec. Present your mind map in a 5-minute presentation. (If you need some large sheets of paper, ask me.) We will also discuss the talk by Back and finalize the presentation schedule.
  • 10 Jan. turn in your paper. Your paper should be 5 or 6 pages in IEEE style or a similar style. You can download the style for Latex and Word.
  • 7 Jan. I will be available for questions. You do not need to come to class.
  • 14 Jan. Present your paper in a 10-minute presentation (plus 5 minutes for questions). No class on 10 Dec, 21 Jan, or 28 Jan.
